5 Virtues of the Day of Arafah every Muslim should know

The Day of Arafah is the most devotional, spiritual and sacred day for all Muslims around the world. According to the Islamic calendar, the Day of Arafah falls on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah. It is observed on the second day of Hajj (pilgrimage).

On this day, Muslim Haji (pilgrims) travel from Mina to the nearest hillside which is called the Mount of Arafat and a plain called the Plain of Arafat. Mount of Arafat is 70-meters in height and this is the mount where the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) delivered his final sermon to the Muslims about 1,400 years ago.

The most favorable day for Allah: The day of Arafah is the day which is considered the most favorable day for Allah. On the day of Arafah, millions of Muslims from every corner of the world gather without any discrimination on all levels, at the plain of Arafat.

1 Hajj is performed if you are there on the day of Arafah: When the day of Arafah is experienced and observed by the Haji (pilgrims) on the plain of Arafat, the Hajj becomes valid.

It was narrated that Abdur-Rahman bin Yamur said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah when people came to him and asked him about Hajj. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Hajj is Arafat. Whoever catches up with the night of Arafat before dawn comes on the night of Jam (Al-Muzdalifah), his Hajj is complete.'” – Sunan an-Nasa'i 3016

2 Fasting on the day of Arafah: Arafah is the day of forgiveness from sins and grants freedom from the Fire of Hell. Abu Qatadah narrated that: The Prophet said: “Fast the Day of Arafah, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins) of the year after it, and the year before it.” – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 749

3 Pilgrims are not allowed to observe fast: However, the pilgrims are not allowed to observe fast on this day. It was narrated that ‘Ikrimah said: “I entered upon Abu Hurairah in his house and asked him about fasting the Day of ‘Arafah at ‘Arafat.

Abu Hurairah said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade fasting the Day of ‘Arafah at ‘Arafat.’” Sunan Ibn MajahVol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 1732

4 It is a day of Eid for Pilgrims: It is also Eid day for those people who are performing Hajj and present in the ground of Arafah.  Uqbah bin Amir narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: “The Day of Arafah, the Day of Nahr, and the Days of Tashriq are Eid for us. The people of Islam and they are days of eating and drinking,” – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 773[irp]

5 One of the best days to plead and pray is the day of Arafah: The Day of Arafah is not only for the pilgrims who are present at the plane of Arafat but also for other Muslims around the world wherever they are as well.
